This is a full size crossover utility vehicle from Ford Motor Company. The Flex is based on Fairlane concept which was unveiled in the year 2005 during the North American International Auto Show. The first Flex model was unveiled in 2007 in New York Motor Show, while the sales begun in 2008 as a 2009 year model. It has replaced Freestar mini-van and it was the first model to come with both minivan and SUV characteristics. It is based on D4 platform which it shares with the present Ford Explorer and Lincoln MKT. Since it was first launched in 2007, Ford’s Flex has gone through various redesigns hence gaining the name of a Utility vehicle owing to its ability to carry seven passengers with ease and comfortably. Now, Ford is getting ready to release yet another redesign of the Flex which will be a 2016 year model. This model will not go through significant changes. The familiar boxy design which features in the first generation will still be maintained by this second generation model, but the fascias will be altered to some extent. This new 2016 Ford Flex will come in three trims namely SE, SEL and Limited.
2016 Ford Flex: Redesign Exterior and Interior
According to the latest information, there will be no major refreshments in the 2016 Ford Flex body design. Nevertheless, its grille will receive some minor changes and new dimensions while the headlights and taillights will be redesigned. These lights are expected to lose their contrasting colors. The new exterior changes are aimed at making the 2016 Ford Flex to appear more powerful. The company has indicated that this new model will get a futuristic appearance. This second generation model will acquire more curvy edges unlike the current model which bears sharp edges. There will be addition of new indicator lights at its front and rear ends, and wheels with newly styled 17 inch wheels.
Speaking of its cabin, it will be redesigned to pave way for minimal improvements. The current seat upholstery will be rolled over while the top trim will get leather upholstered seats. The 2016 Ford Flex will come with three rows of seats and a roomy cabin thanks to its boxy shape. In the high trim model, there will be wood ascents. The new model’s instrumental panel features a 4.2 inch touch screen and Sony radio with 12 speakers. As for the safety features, the 2016 Ford Flex is equipped with a rear view camera, anti lock brakes, six airbags, stability and traction control, cruise control, forward collision alert system, blind spot monitors. Some of these safety features are standard while others are available in the top trims.
2016 Ford Flex: Engine and Fuel Economy
This redesigned model will get two engine variants for buyers to choose from. The first engine alternative is a 3.5 liter V6 delivering 287 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque. The second engine option is a 3.5 liter EcoBoost twin-turbo combined with direct injection. This second unit will be able to produce 365 horses and 350 pounds-feet of torque. Both engines shall be mated to a six speed automatic transmission but there are expectations of a new nine speed gearbox. This auto’s EPA ratings stand at 18/25 mpg city/highway with the base engine and the four wheel drive. For the EcoBoost engine, the EPA is about 16/23 mpg.
2016 Ford Flex: Release Date and Price
The new model’s price is likely to remain in the same range like the outgoing model. 2016 Ford Flex basic model will cost about $ 29 000, the SEL about $ 38 000 and the Limited trim about $ 45 000. This price variation is as a result of the available engine and other auto components. The 2016 Ford Flex is expected to be launched towards the end of 2015.
