Today, almost every other crossover and sports utility vehicle under Ford’s line-up has gone through some redesigning. In that case, it seems that it is time for the Explorer to get some updates. In fact, its competitors like Mazda CX-9, Dodge Durango, Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder and Jeep Grand Cherokee have all been refreshed, yet the Explorer has not received any changes since its production for the 2011 year model. In that case, the 2016 year model will receive major refreshments in order to maintain its rank in the industry’s largest and most profitable segment. This upcoming model will soldier on with its old Volvo-derived unibody architecture that is also used in making Ford Taurus sedan.
2016 Ford Explorer: Redesign Exterior and Interior
As for its exterior looks, 2016 Ford Explorer will get a refreshed wide slatted grille while its front edges will offer it a more boxy appearance than before. Other visible changes on its prototype include narrower headlights which are also more traditional. Its new bumper is a bit lower while the automakers have included a few extra air vents which add in a more aggressive appearance. Apart from these visible changes, there are other expected exterior changes which include LED fog light and sharper LED taillights. Furthermore, its weight is expected to be reduced with the use of light weight materials such as aluminum in making its chassis. Upon completion, the 2016 Ford Explorer is expected to lose approximately 300 pounds. This will greatly boost its performance as well as reduce its fuel consumption.
At its interior, there will be heated passenger and driver seats. Moreover, the seats will be adjustable in eight different positions, and they will be upholstered using high quality leather. These seats will also be folded to create extra cargo space. This new model will have various power features including power door locks, power windows and power door locks. This model will also come with various high class instrumentation features which include low fuel level warning, external temperature display, a compass, trim computer and a high tech clock. Regarding its convenience features, the 2016 Ford Explorer will be equipped with adjustable pedals, front and rear end mug holders, front and rear door pockets, cruise control, electronic power steering, universal remote transmitter, rear view camera, rear parking sensors and tilt and telescopic steering wheel among others.
2016 Ford Explorer: Engine Options
In this 2016 Ford Explorer, the former 2.0 liter EcoBoost is likely to be eliminated, and replaced with a more powerful 2.0 liter engine found in the 2015 Ford Edge. Other expected engines include the bigger 3.7 liter V6 and 3.5 liter nonturbo, as well as the 2.7 liter V6 liter Nano EcoBoost. These engines are likely to send power to the all wheel and the front wheel drive modes. Its transmission is expected to remain the same standard six speed automatic.
